A Look back at the Music of 2012

2012 was a year that was filled with some of the best music the Post-Hardcore scene has ever witnessed. Bands like "Memphis May Fire", "Pierce The Veil", and "Woe Is Me" all came out with music that reestablished just how moshtastic they really are.  I should know this as I got to partake in some moshing fun at some of their concerts.  The more important matter right now however is the new artists that paved their own road in 2012 and came out with some amazing music and changed the scene forever.  I'm talking about "Hands Like Houses", The Early November", Set It Off", "Crown The Empire" and "Issues".

First up on my list is "The Early November".  "The Early November" has actually been around since 1999!  They signed with Drive-Thru records in 2002 and came out with Two full lengths and two EPs.  In 2006 however they went on an indefinite hiatus.  2012 was the year for them to come back and holy shit come back they did.  In July 2012 the band came out with their album "In Currents".  This album is everything music should be.  It's well produced, has amazing lyrics, fantastic guitar playing, and is just all around amazing.  The one song that  shows this better then any other on the album is also called "In Currents".  Take a listen to this song and you will instantly feel inspired.  Find out for yourselves below!

Next up is an orchestral rock band straight from Tampa Florida called "Set It Off".  They formed in 2008 and signed to Equal Vision Records in 2011.  The magic really began in September of 2012 when Their CD "Cinematics" was released.  Ladies and Gentlemen get ready for something unique because this album is the definition.  Many of the songs off this album sound like they were produced for a Vegas show!  The best example of this is embodied in their song Plastic Promises.  Take a listen and enjoy this beautiful mix of Post-Hardcore lyrics, show tune orchestra, and rock guitar playing.

Next up is a band for the people who need a sprinkle of Dubstep and rap in their Post-Hardcore bands.    That's right Ladies and Gentleman I'm talking about "Issues".  "Issues" is a Post-Hardcore band from Atlanta Georgia.  The majority of the members are from Woe Is Me, the most prominent being the vocalist Tyler Carter.  The band formed in the summer of 2012 and signed to Rise Records.  Their debut EP, Black Diamonds came out November 13th.  Now we all know that in the Post-Hardcore scene, it's getting harder to find anything unique.  A lot of new bands are just doing the same shit that's already out there.  This is far from the case with Issue's.  In their debut EP, every song is different.  They go from Rihannacore (yes you didn't read that wrong just look up "The Worst Of Them") in one song to rapping in another.  It's incredible what this band has done.  Just take a look at their song "Love, Sex, Riot" and see how good their rap skills are.

Now for the real show!  Ladies and Gentleman "Crown The Empire"!  "Crown The Empire" is a Post-Hardcore band from Dallas Texas and is signed to Rise Records.  In late 2012 they came out with their best selling CD yet "The Fallout."  This band has really taken 2012 and made the best of it.  They have went from being almost unknown to having almost a million views on their song "The Fallout" off of their new CD.  It's no wonder why either!  They have one of the most unique and best sounds in the genre.  It's like if Panic at the Disco and a Post-Hardcore band had a baby, Crown the Empire would be the result.  The song "Johnny's Revenge" Is a good example of this.  The song starts off with an accordion and leads into one of the most brutal verses I've ever heard.  Nothing on the CD compares to their song "The Fallout" though.  This song is lyrically and musically gorgeous.  Just take a listen for yourselves.  Trust me you won't regret it.

And now Ladies and Gentleman I've saved the best for last.  I introduce you to "Hands Like Houses."  They are a Post-Hardcore band from Canberra and are signed to Rise Records.  They have been around since 2008 but recently released their debut album "Ground Dweller" In March of 2012.  No band in my opinion sounds better, or has made better music in 2012 then "Hands Like Houses."   They will paint a story for you with their lyrics, make you shed tears with their beautiful instrumentals, and send chills down your spine with their incredible vocals.  One listen and you will instantly be hooked to this amazing band.  Just take a listen to their hit single "Lion Skin" with guest vocalist Tyler Carter and Jonny Craig.  This song is the definition of beauty.

"This Ain't No Place For Animals" is another that will blow your mind away.  This song begins with a harp and leads into a verse filled with unbelievable guitar riffs and vocals.  Take a listen here.

I close this blog now with but one statement.  If this is how 2012 was, imagine how great 2013 is going to be.  These bands will only get better and new bands will emerge that will forever change the way we think of music.  Right now, I can only imagine what 2013 will hold and will report on it whenever I have time to.  To all my readers have a happy new year and I hope it is filled with many amazing memories and music

Keeping music in your lives
